In June 2019 the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) – Office of Policy and Sustainable Practices (OPSP) mailed out informational postcard to restaurants in the Memphis, Tennessee area. The intent of the postcard effort was to provide restaurants with information relating to food waste awareness, donor liability protections around donating food, and direct restaurants receiving cards to the Get Food Smart TN website.
Following the distribution of the informational postcards, OPSP staff conducted outreach and surveys of Memphis Restaurant Association and Project Green Fork restaurants. The goal of the after distribution survey was to better understand the impact of the mass mailing effort and inform whether future initiatives would be of value in Tennessee. In March 2020 OPSP plans to supplement information gathered from the Memphis effort by coordinating an additional, more limited distribution of postcards in the Jackson, Tennessee area. The March 2020 effort will also seek to evaluate the success of two means of distribution; mailing postcards versus hand delivery.
For Memphis restaurants that received a postcard in June 2019, OPSP has provided a map below of places that accept food donations in the Memphis area. OPSP has also provided information on liability protections (Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act) and tax exemption information.
